Roy Ashburn
On March 3, 2010, California State Senator Roy Ashburn was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after having left a gay nightclub called Faces in Sacramento with a male passenger. In the past, Ashburn had questioned the relevance of the issue or dodged it altogether when asked about his sexual orientation. After the arrest, Ashburn initially wouldn't say whether he is gay but did say he didn't consider himself an anti-gay activist. A week later, Ashburn announced that he is gay in an interview on KERN radio. He agreed he'd voted conservatively on gay issues, voting against California recognizing same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, the proclamation of Harvey Milk Day, prohibiting discrimination against gays in public places, and 30 other bills, but said his votes "reflect the wishes of the people in my district."
