David Dreier
In September 2004, California Representative David Dreier was reported to be in a relationship with his chief of staff, Brad Smith, with whom he lived and paid an inordinately high salary. After one online news outlet ran the story, a number of others announced that they had been readying similar stories for print. The reports further alleged that local papers in Dreier's district deliberately keept their reporters from asking Dreier about his sexuality or his positions on issues relating to gay rights in order to not upset the voters in his conservative district. Dreier had earlier been asked if he was heterosexual, but he refused to answer. It was revealed in 2005 that Dreier was passed over to replace indicted House Majority Leader Tom DeLay because of his sexuality. He also featured in the 2010 film "Outrage." Dreier had voted in support of the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 (which would ban same-sex marriage at the federal level) and the Marriage Protection Act in 2004(which would prevent courts from challenging DOMA). He voted against gay adoption in D.C., and against inclusion of homosexuals as a protected class in hate crimes in the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. He is currently in office.
